Please see below for some of the more commonly asked questions, if you need more information please call or email us.
What is the process for preparing my accounts and tax return?
At the start of each financial year (from 1 April), we will send you a secure email containing a link to your personalised online questionnaire(s).
This updated digital system replaces our previous manual process, where clients had to download, complete, and email their questionnaires back to us. The new online format is designed to streamline the process, making it more convenient for you to provide the necessary information we need to process your tax returns.
However, if you prefer to utilise our previous method, downloadable questionnaires are still available on our website under Services > 2025 Annual Accounts Questionnaires.
Once we have received your completed questionnaire(s) and any required supporting documentation, we will begin working on your accounts. If we require any additional information during the process, we will let you know you. We make every effort to get your accounts processed in the quickest time possible without sacrificing accuracy and professional quality.
Once your accounts are complete, we will send you the final copy for your signature and then submit your tax return to Inland Revenue (IRD).
Why do I need to fill out the questionnaire every year?
At the end of each financial year, if we process your annual accounts we require you to fill out and sign the questionnaire form. This is to ensure that you include all the relevant information that we need to complete your financial statements as things may have changed over the year.
When the questionnaire is signed, it gives AAF permission to work on your accounts which is a requirement by IRD and needs to be done on a yearly basis.
Will you deal with Inland Revenue for me?
Yes, as your trusted accounting firm, we will handle all communications and interactions with the Inland Revenue on your behalf, ensuring your tax matters are managed efficiently and effectively.
As part of our service we will remind you of any IRD payment and return deadlines coming up, and we will deal with any issues that come up with the IRD.
What types of services do you offer?
We offer a range of services tailored to small businesses or contractors with many industries. From assistance with budgets, cash flow forecasting and business valuations, we can offer advice in all areas, giving you confidence in business.
Refer to our services drop down menu for more information.
Do I need to register for GST?
You do not have to register GST just because you start a business or organisation. However, you must register if you are an entity and either of these apply to you:
- you carry out a taxable activity and your turnover was at least $60,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it will be at least $60,000 in the next 12 months
- you carry out a taxable activity and you add GST to the price of the goods or services you sell
You can still register for GST if your turnover from a taxable activity is less than $60,000. Registering for GST can offer several benefits, such as helping you stay on top of your paperwork and giving you a clearer picture of how your business is performing. It also allows you to claim back expenses related to your taxable activity and may make it easier to deal with suppliers.
However, there are some downsides to consider. Once registered, you’ll need to add GST to your prices, file regular GST returns, and ensure your payments are on time to avoid penalties.
What accounting software do you use?
We use Xero Accounting Software and are proud Platinum Partners.
Xero is affordable, user friendly, cloud based and intuitive. It has lots of functionality packed into it and being cloud based means that AAF can access the software to help and advise when required. We’ll also process your end of year accounting work in Xero so there is no duplication, and no annual “alignment journals” required.
Can I see you for other business advice? Do you do business planning?
YES! Many businesses get their accounts and can see how their business performed in the year that has already been. You know it is too late to look at improving last year and that you should take the time to create your business plan but you keep putting it off because you don’t know where to start, have never needed one before or just don’t know when you will find the time. The most successful businesses are run by people who plan ahead, set targets and know where they are going. We are able to help you with this. We want your business to be successful and will assist you in preparing a business plan. Most people find it much easier to do this when they have an appointment and have someone to guide them through the process. Clients are often surprised about how little time this can take and the difference it makes to their business to have up to date information at hand. We can also provide you with monthly management reports and/or meet with you to discuss your progress. It can be very advantageous to have a monthly budget vs. actual comparison report to keep a close track on how you are going and give you the opportunity to act quickly to remedy any problem areas that may arise.
